Questions & objections
Each entry states the strongest form of the objection, why thoughtful Orthodox raise it, the canonical and patristic evidence on both sides, and a carefully limited conclusion.
- Is Canon 15 optional or obligatory?Whether the canon merely protects those who withdraw from a heresy preaching bishop, or positively commands withdrawal.
- Does “pollution” mean the sacraments become invalid?Whether defilement (μολυσμός) from communion with an uncondemned heretic means his mysteries are empty of grace.
- Does stopping commemoration create schism?Whether ceasing to commemorate one’s bishop before a synod has ruled is, by definition, schism.
- Can laypeople judge bishops?Whether the discernment and withdrawal Canon 15 protects belongs also to the laity, and where lay judgment ends.
- What qualifies as an “already condemned” heresy?Canon 15's precondition, and the whole modern dispute in one question: must the heresy be named by an ecumenical council, or does patristic condemnation of its substance suffice?
- Is indirect communion the same as direct communion? If communion with the heretic defiles, what of communion with those who commune with him, and where does the chain stop?
- Can someone remain temporarily through fear or weakness? What the doctrine of defilement means, and does not mean, for the frightened, the pressured, and the confused.
- What happens when there is no accessible priest?Walling off can mean months or years without the Mysteries. Is that spiritual starvation, and is remaining without Communion automatically sinful?
