The Lifting of Anathemas (1965): Gesture Without Healing

In 1965, the mutual lifting of the 1054 anathemas between Rome and Constantinople was announced. Formally, this act did not restore communion, nor did it resolve dogmatic differences. Yet in the modern world, symbol outweighs footnotes.

The act was widely interpreted, by media, clergy, and laity alike, as meaning:

The schism is over

Rome is no longer in error

The Councils no longer bind

None of these were formally stated, but ambiguity teaches more effectively than clarity.

In patristic theology, anathemas were not curses, but boundary markers. To remove them without repentance, doctrinal correction, or conciliar reception is to remove the fence while the disease remains. This led directly to modern confusion about who is “inside” and who is “outside” the Church.
