What the Councils Would Say · 20 of 22
The Councils Used Anathema as Medicine, Not Diplomacy
Anathemas were not insults. They were diagnoses. They identified teachings that made salvation impossible if held stubbornly. To lift anathemas without repentance, doctrinal correction, or conciliar agreement would have been judged by the Councils as pastoral negligence.
Modern ecumenical gestures that remove anathemas while affirming continued disagreement would have been seen by the Fathers as tearing down fences while the disease remains.
The Councils healed by clarity, not by goodwill.
