The Encyclical of St Gennadius of Constantinople
Received as one canon: the encyclical of Gennadius and his synod against ordination for money.
The one canon of this collection, given in this library's own summary.
Canon 1Against simony
Editorial interpretationAncient epitome As our Lord without money and without price ordained his Apostles, so should we ordain the clergy, for this duty is explicitly laid upon us, not only by the words of the Gospel but also by a canon of the great Ecumenical Synod of Chalcedon.
The letter of Gennadius and the synod with him to all the metropolitans and to the pope of Rome: whoever gives or receives money for ordination, whether clergy or layman, is condemned, after the Lord’s word, “freely ye have received, freely give,” and the sentence of Peter upon Simon.
