The Canons of the Holy Apostles

Κανόνες τῶν Ἁγίων Ἀποστόλων

The eighty-five canons prefixed to the whole canonical collection, ratified by the Second Canon of the Quinisext Council. They govern ordination, the order of the clergy, and communion with those outside the Church.

  1. Canon 9Remaining for the whole Liturgy

    Editorial interpretation

    The faithful who enter and hear the Scriptures but do not remain for the prayer and holy communion are to be excommunicated as causing disorder.

  2. Canon 10Prayer with the excommunicated

    Editorial interpretation

    Whoever prays together with an excommunicated person, even privately, is himself to be excommunicated.

  3. Canon 11Prayer with the deposed

    Editorial interpretation

    A clergyman who joins in prayer with a deposed clergyman, treating him as still a cleric, is himself to be deposed.

  4. Canon 45Prayer with heretics

    Editorial interpretation

    A bishop, presbyter or deacon who only prays together with heretics is to be suspended; if he permits them to act as clergy, he is to be deposed.

  5. Canon 46Heretical baptism and offering

    Editorial interpretation

    A bishop or presbyter who accepts the baptism or the sacrifice of heretics is to be deposed: what concord has Christ with Belial?

  6. Canon 47Rebaptism and unbaptized

    Editorial interpretation

    A bishop or presbyter who rebaptizes one who has a true baptism, or fails to baptize one defiled by the impious, is to be deposed.

  7. Canon 64Fasting and feasting with Jews

    A clergyman found fasting or feasting with the Jews is to be suspended.

  8. Canon 65Praying in an alien assembly

    Editorial interpretation

    A clergyman or layman who enters the assembly of Jews or of heretics to pray is to be deposed or excommunicated.

  9. Canon 68Ordination by heretics

    Editorial interpretation

    Those baptized or ordained by heretics can be neither of the faithful nor of the clergy, for such rites do not confer what the Church confers.

  10. Canon 70Keeping the feasts of the Jews

    Editorial interpretation

    A clergyman or layman who keeps the fasts or feasts of the Jews, or receives their festal gifts, is to be suspended or excommunicated.
