Elder Philotheos Zervakos
Γέρων Φιλόθεος Ζερβάκος
Archimandrite, elder of Longovarda Monastery, Paros
An influential Greek monastic elder who warned against ecclesiastical innovations and the division that calendar reform could produce.
Life and background
Philotheos was spiritual father to many Orthodox Christians and maintained the ascetical and liturgical heritage of the Longovarda monastery on Paros.
What was defended?
Orthodox tradition, calendar reform and opposition to ecumenism
He criticized the calendar reform and opposed ecumenical innovations. Constantine Cavarnos recounts his opposition and his continued concerns about the calendar division.
Opposition and consequences
The historical accounts describe efforts to resist innovation and concerns over possible interventions at the monastery. These do not establish that Philotheos was tortured or imprisoned for this stand.
How long did it last?
Decades of public and written opposition in the twentieth century; no documented single continuous persecution period.
Historical distinction
The distinction between his protests and a formal personal cessation of commemoration must be respected; do not invent one from his calendar opposition.
