Nikolaos Sotiropoulos
Νικόλαος Σωτηρόπουλος
Lay theologian, biblical expositor and preacher
A Greek Orthodox lay theologian known for direct scriptural preaching, polemics against ecumenism, and decades of public lectures.
Life and background
Sotiropoulos preached and wrote on Holy Scripture, Orthodox doctrine and pastoral life. He was associated with Metropolitan Augoustinos Kantiotes and belonged to a wider Greek circle of traditionalist anti-ecumenist writers and clergy.
What was defended?
Public opposition to ecumenism and disputed ecclesiastical discipline
He criticized theological statements and ecumenical activities that he believed compromised Orthodox doctrine. His sermons and publications were addressed to a wide Greek-speaking audience.
Opposition and consequences
On 14 December 1993 a Major and Supreme Synod under the Ecumenical Patriarchate imposed excommunication on him. Admirers and church figures disputed the penalty and its fairness; other commentators defended the disciplinary decision. The existence of the sanction is historical fact, while its validity and merits remain contested.
How long did it last?
1993–2014: the ecclesiastical sanction and controversy continued during the remainder of his life; this does not mean he was physically imprisoned or tortured.
Historical distinction
Do not describe his excommunication as unanimously accepted or unanimously invalid. He was a lay theologian, not a bishop or ordained priest. The site does not confer the formal ecclesiastical title of saint.
